How to enable Dark Mode in Google Docs (App and Browser)

Google Docs is a great word processor that is free to use and can be used on Android, iOS, or any other device that has a web browser. Apart from it being free, it’s very useful for taking down notes, inserting images, and even creating tables for your data.

As it is with most Google products, you would expect Google Docs to have a Dark Mode feature, right? Well, at least the Android and iOS apps have dark modes, the web version of Google Docs misses out on Dark Mode, but you can still enable it. Enable Dark Mode for Google Docs on Android and iOS

While there is no dark mode option for the web version of Google Docs, there is a way that you can follow to enable Dark Mode for Google Docs on the web. We will also show you how you can enable Dark Mode for the Google Docs app on your mobile device. Let’s start the guide for Android and iOS apps.

Dark Mode on Google Docs App

The Google Docs app for Android and iOS has a built-in option to choose between light and dark modes. You can follow these steps to enable dark mode for the Android and iOS apps.

1. Ensure that you have the latest version of the Google Docs app. If not, check for any updates and install them on your device.
2. Once you have signed into the app, tap on the hamburger menu at the top left corner.
3. When the side panel open, tap on the Settings option.
   
4. You will see an option that says Theme.
   
5. You can now choose from Light, Dark, or System Default.
6. Once you have enabled Dark Mode, your Google Docs page will have everything in dark mode, including the pages. The text that you type will be white in color.
   

The settings for Dark Mode on Google Docs are the same for Android and iOS versions of the app.

Enable Dark Mode for Google Docs on Browser

Google Docs ark Mode on Chromium-based Web Browsers

Using Google Docs on web browsers like Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Opera, Vivaldi, Brave, and a ton of other web browsers out there based on the open-source Chromium project? Well, you can make use of a web browser extension that enables you to get Dark Mode for Google Docs. The reason why you need to use a web extension is simply that the browser’s dark mode theme doesn’t apply to Google Docs.

1. Launch your favorite Chromium-based web browser.
2. Now head over to the Chrome Web Store by clicking this link.
3. On the left top corner of the browser, click on the search box.
4. Type in Google Docs Dark Mode and hit the search key on your keyboard.
5. Look for the web extension that says Dark Mode for Google G Suite (you can also try Google Docs Dark Mode). You can also click on the link to visit the extensions page on the web store directly.
6. Click on the blue Add to Chrome button. The extension will now be downloaded and installed on your web browser.
   
7. Simply open up Google Docs. You will now see that the dark mode has been applied to various elements of Google Docs.

Google Docs Dark Mode on Mozilla Firefox Browser

Some might think, well the dark mode settings on Firefox should help enable Google Docs by default, right? Well, the answer is no. Even Firefox isn’t able to change the light mode of Google Docs to Dark mode. However, just like Chromium-based web browsers, you can install a web extension that helps you to get Dark Mode on Google Docs.

1. Open up Mozilla Firefox and click on the hamburger menu at the top right corner.
2. Click on Add-On and Themes from the menu that pops up.
3. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on Find more Add-ons.
4. On the top right of the Add-ons page, click on the search bar.
5. Type in Google Docs Dark Mode and hit the enter key. Or, you could click on this link to visit the dark mode page.
6. All you need to do is click on Add to Firefox button.
7. Open up Google Docs and you should now see all the elements in dark mode except for the page where you type on.

This is how you can enable Dark Mode for Google Docs on your Android, iOS, and web versions of the word processor. While the apps have a Dark Mode option, the web versions still miss out.
